"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." these are live pictures from san francisco outsides betty ong chinese recreation center. it's the first stop on president obama's whirlwind bay area visit which begins in about three hours when he lands at sfo. the controversial topic he will be addressing and the preparations already underway for his visit. all of that coming up in a live report. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic? steve? >> a spare of the air goes until midnight. the high pressure is here. it's kind of parked itself near us. not much of a breeze. hazy skies. everything, as you can see, as far as cloud cover, the bend in the clouds, that tells you where the high pressure is. the dome of it. it's there. oh, baby, it's cold.

32 napa. a lot of 30s. a bunch. maybe a breeze or a patchy fog holding some of that. in san francisco, it's in the upper 30s or 40s. 34, santa rosa. not far away, i've seen 32. there's couple of upper 20s as well. it's a cold morning. san francisco, not as bad. component of an easterly breeze. 48 and then a high of 62. high pressure says not today. it's going to send everything up and over up towards vancouver and seattle which means we have a lot of sunshine here. as you know, the days are short. cold morning and then sunny. but hazy, patch or two of fog. not a bunch. but there's a little bit around. highs will be in the low to mid- 60s at best here's sal. we're looking at a commute that's slightly different today. it's a little bit lighter in some areas but we've had so some problems. 80 westbound has been up and down but the toll plaza delay has not reached more than 15 minutes. that's about the maximum today. there are no major problems

coming into san francisco. we're also looking at highway 4 which is a little better than it normally is. judging by the comments on the facebook page, we put out a question on my page. are you working this week? some people actually have the whole week off. some people get thursday and friday off. it scare varies and that -- it varies and that will impact the commute. b.a.r.t., caltrain and muni are reporting no delays. back to thdesk. happening today -- president obama is waking up on the west coast this morning. this is video from the president's arrival in seattle yesterday. in just a few hours, he will be arriving in san francisco. the president has a short but busy visit here. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is at the president's first stop with the rundown of the president's complete schedule. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. this visit is all about fund- raising but the president will be making a policy speech later

on this morning and talking about immigration reform. the first stop of the morning will be here at the betty ong center in san francisco's chinatown. preparations are well underway both inside the center and outside as well. the secret service is here in and around this facility doing their security sweeps right now. this is a center, by the way, that's named for a hero flight attendant who died on 9/11, betty ong. the president will be here in four hours, speaking inside the gym at 11:30. and he will be calling on congress to pass immigration reform. he wants an earned path to citizenship coupled with tighter border security. the white house says the immigration issue is critical to the asian-american community as well, with an estimated 1.3 million of this country's undocumented immigrants being from asia. the director of a local immigrant rights group is hoping the president can get things moving on the issue. but she's not exactly sure what the plan is.

>> i wish i did. but -- i hope he jumps over congress and does something bold. >> reporter: following the speech this morning, the president will head to the jazz center for a democratic fund- raise there. after that he will attend a private fund-raiser at the home of mark benioff. that's in the presidio heights neighborhood. events are sold out. but tickets had to be reduced leading up to the events. he will be greeted at various locations. the president, again, here at the betty ong center in chinatown at 11:30 this morning. he will be leaving, flying out of sfo midafternoon headed to california. we're live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news.

>> thank you. president obama's visit to the bay area comes as his approval ratings are falling dramatically. on the president's last visit to the area, on june 6th, gallup tracked the approval rating at 62% and disapproval at 32%. by last friday, it was almost the reverse. his approval rating was 39% but disapproval rating, 54%. >> president obama hoped to meet batkid but apparently the superhero has a very busy schedule. he was among the many people who cheered on miles scott during his make a wish day here. but the batkid is not available because he's scheduled to been a national television show. now, ktvu will have full coverage of president obama's visit on the channel 2 news at noon. you can get updates on our facebook, twitter pages and on

mobile ktvu.com. in other news -- a woman is in critical condition after she jumped from the third deck of the oakland coliseum yesterday. it happened just as thousands of fans were leaving the raiders' game. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live from the coliseum to tell us about the good samaritan. >> reporter: yes, he's being called a hero. a 61-year-old marine corps veteran from stockton has been coming to raiders' games since he was a kid. the incident happened behind me. it all happened as the raiders/titans game let out. the woman jumped from section 301 above the south end zone covered by a tarp and closed to the public. the good samaritan was by the flagpoles when he lunged to

grab her. she -- she plunged 50 feet to the pavement when fans begged her to stop. >> your heart reaches out to the woman and the man who very heroically tried to save her. you always wonder why, why would you do that? >> reporter: the good samaritan suffered serious injuries. he's credited with breaking the woman's fall and saving her life all she that woman is in critical can -- although that woman is in critical can be. we know this is the first year that the good samaritan has been bought season tickets. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. the raiders and as can have short-term deals to stay. today the chronicle reports there will be a one-year lease considered for the raiders. they will also vote on a reported deal that would keep the as in oakland for the next

two years. however, neither lease agreement deals with the long- term question of whether oakland can keep the as and the raiders from leaving town. the warriors already are planning a move to san francisco. 7:08. hundreds of people remain without power in daly city. pg&e says the outage was first reported just before 12:30 this morning in the westlake neighborhood west of mission street. initially, more than 6300 customers lost power because of damage to an underground cable. right now, about 1500 people still don't have electricity but pg&e says they expect to have the power fully restored by 9:30 this morning. a real estate developer is at the center of a sex scandal tied to one of san francisco's oldest churches. the landmark, st. francis in north beach, has fired william mclaughlin. he's a marin county real estate developer and animal activist who served as chairman of the

church's volunteer program. his firing reportedly stemmed from allegations of improper behavior, including -- involving mclaughlin and a former church employee including lewd photos and sex in the sanctuary. he's also accused of misusing church funds. >> all right. 7:09. for the third year in a row, california was named the worst- run state in america. the website 24/7wall street used financial information to rank all 50 states and it says california took a big hit with the housing crisis. california also ranked dead last for having the 20th highest debt per capty ta. the third biggest budget and the second highest enemployment rate. there's good news. california has the 11th highest per capita of income. the best-run state according to the survey, north dakota. a new report on oakland's i.d. program says both people are not using the card's debit

function. the chronicle says more than 4,000 i.d. cards have been issued since february but only 80 people have used it as a debit card. now, the cards were created in part for undocumented immigrants. when it was first introduced, the cost of using the debit service was higher than other cards on the market but since then, the city has reduced the debit fees. also later today, a san francisco task force appointed by mayor lee will recommend ways to fix the transportation system in the city. after studying the issue for months, the task force says it will cost $10 billion over the next 15 years to pay for repairs. that task force is recommending three ballot measures that would raise about a billion dollars each to help pay the cost. 7:11. saying goodbye to a dedicated coach and teacher who died in much the same way he lived. >> that was him. getting out of the car to help somebody. that's the way he was on

campus. >> how his school plans to honor 76-year-old john webb after he was killed over the weekend on 680 in fremont. plus the knockout game comes here to california where the dangerous trend was reported here in this state and why it's so hard to find the suspects. good morning. right now we're looking at a commute that's moderately heavy. i will tell you where the heaviest traffic is and how you can get around it. except for some patches of some fog or low clouds, it's cold out there. it will be dry today and tomorrow. but i will tell you, if there's gonna be any rain this holiday weekend.

it's called knockout game. it's come to california. the game involves people randomly targeting unsuspected strangers and knocking them out with one punch to the head. knockout game incidents have

been reported in at least five states and washington, d.c. then a few days ago, an incident was reported in san diego. at least four victims have died. police say it's hard to find the people involved because victims are being knocked unconscious and don't remember what happened. a shortage of forensic pathologists at the san francisco medical examiner's office is being blamed for long delays in releasing death certificates. city data shows that more than three quarters of all pending cases have been waiting for a cause of death for more than three months. the office is supposed to have four forensic pathologists working but it currently only has one permanent and one temporary pathologist. the chief medical examiner says the office is working to fix the problem. 7:15. unattended deep-fryer blamed for a house fire last night in pittsburg. it happened yesterday around 5:30 at a house on springfield drive. firefighters say the smoke and the flames was visible from a

half-mile away. it caused about $60,000 damage. >> on scene, we had heavy involvement in the kitchen. it started to spread into the living room. we were able to knock the fire down. >> the battalion chief also reminds everybody to be extra careful with the deep fryers. they are used to a lot to fry turkeys for thanksgiving. crews are making progress on a fire burning in sonoma county. this one started fry about ten miles northeast of -- friday about ten miles northeast of geyserville. it's 65% contained. it's burned about 3300 acres. all evacuation orders for the area have been lifted. some of the 1700 firefighters will leave today. the cause of that fire, still under investigation. it's 7:16. cleanup efforts are underway one week after that deadly tornado tore through illinois. this is video from new mindon, illinois. people say some of their homes were torn from the foundations

and are completely gone. others are clearing debris and sorting it into piles. at least two deaths are blamed on the tornado. a new report shows that hundreds of underground water leaks will go unmonitored because of a new state policy. since the 1980s, more than 44,000 underground fuel tank leaks have been recorded in the state. but a change went into affect last year that allows some of these sites to end regulatory monitoring even if contamination is traced. the state said too much money was being spent on low threat sites. marin county is a big step closer to banning single use plastic bags. residents are being invited to express their opinions on the county's environmental impact report on the issue. county officials are expected to certify the report in late january. after that is done, cities and the county are expected to approve a ban on plastic bags. 7:17. about 4.5 million californians will travel for the

thanksgiving holiday. and the travel experts including our own sal castanedo say the day before thanksgiving is expected to be the busiest day os on the -- day on the highways. if you drive on wednesday, leave before 10:00 a.m. to beat the biggest traffic jams and sunday will be busy all day. another 500,000 californians are expected to fly somewhere for thanksgiving. the airlines say check in, see if your flight is leaving on time. we've heard about the weather problems, too. they also want you to get there at least 90 minutes before your scheduled takeoff. all three bay area airports expect crowds to be bigger this year than last year. speaking of traffic, let's check in with sal right now. the regular commute might be different this week. >> yes. we've been doing this a long time. >> yes. >> even you -- you too, dave, you've been here for a while. this week is different. this week we won't see the

typical big backups at the toll plaza every day. today we might see one. let's take a look at some of the pictures that we have for you. san mateo bridge not all that bad right here as you drive across to the san mateo bridge. there are no major problems. but if you are looking at these commute pictures i'm showing you and some of them will be lighter than normal. let's take a look at highway 4. a little bit of slow traffic coming up over the hill. no major problems. and public transportation systems are doing a normal thing today. they are doing regular schedule. westbound 237, you can see traffic is a little bit slow. so today is the day that most people do have to go to work just judging by the comments on social media on my facebook page, most people have thursday and friday off. some lucky people have the entire week off. who are those people? let's go to steve. >> yeah. who are those people, sal? good morning. clear for most. a little bit of fog around. there's a little bit. not much. but a little bit of stress. otherwise, clear and cold.

any rain holiday week? does not look like much will happen here. it's been a mostly dry november. last tuesday and wednesday were good. hint of something this thursday. does not look like it will make it. everything says it will push south and that's probably the projection. but again, we'll ease into that. don't cancel any plans or any anything. we'll see. we'll know more hon wednesday. as far as rain, we could use some. san francisco's picked up 1.69 total. that's only 37% of normal. should be around 4.5 inches this time of year. for november we've had 1 1 -- we've had 1.31. won't see anything for a while. but the low that brought us our rain is doing all sorts of damage in the weather department with freezing rain. probably the worst. our rain has moved through in the deep south. if anything has travel plans between the carolina, tuesday, wednesday and then the

northeast wednesday and thursday, this looks like a whopper of a system. so just to give you a heads up there. for us here, you can see the bend in the clouds. that says up and over the mountain of high pressure, even though it's not that strong. 30s and 40s. very cold for many. not too bad for others. but there's a lot of cold air in place. 18 up in tahoe. 31 ukiah. 32 up in middletown and lake county and sacramento, 39. it's a dry forecast for us. we'll talk about late wednesday into thursday. but right now, it does not look like much is going to happen here unless you are heading to southern california. the name might have more rain than anything here. the cloud and rain forecast doesn't do much. watch how it tweaks the system. there it goes. it goes all the way down to southern california. that looks to be the trend here. i don't think much will happen here. we'll get a lot of clouds. cold morning, sunny, patch or two of some fog. temperatures today, again, a lot of 60s or upper 50s. everyone will be pretty close here from stinson beach,

prepared. making the cross-country journey to washington, d.c. since november 1st. the official tree lighting ceremony will take place december 3rd in front of the capitol. some animal rights activists are hoping to put a stop to one of the floats in this year's macy's thanksgiving parade. thousands of people have signed a petition by the group peta to cancel the seaworld floats. it comes after the release of a documentary called black fish which looks at the safety and ethics of killer whales. an iraq war veteran is suing the army. his lawsuit claims the army denied him full education and retirement benefits. yale law students working on this case says he has a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. but the army diagnosed him with "adjustment disorder." and that makes him eligible for just half of the benefits he says he deserves. 7:25. a bay area navy pilot received

a hero's welcome as he came home from afghanistan. we have a spare of the air that goes until midnight. air quality, not the greatest. there's not much going on except high pressure -- oh, my gosh. we just lost a light and i think i lost a day off my life. there's a lot of 30s around. i saw a couple of reports coming in on twitter. low 30s, upper 20s as well. temperatures will continue to be very, very colder inland. not too bad in the city. but there's some cool 30s and 40s for many and they will give way to a lot of -- upper 50s or low 60s. hazy skies, patchy fog. out towards stockton there's very, very thick fog. be careful if you are heading out there. here's sal. we're looking at traffic. it's a lighter -- it's a little lighter than usual. there's wrecks out there. that slows traffic where it had been doing well. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's not too bad of a backup. it's about a 15, maybe a 20-

minute delay. but the traffic is going to be busy. also this morning's commute is okay on the san mateo bridge. but when you get to the peninsula, you might want to stay on 92 and keep going over to highway 280 instead of 101. i will show you why. southbound 101 on the lower peninsula and we'll go to the maps here. you can see that there's a crash here. a couple of crashes in menlo park at willow and that is just not doing well for traffic. traffic is backed up for all the way out from san carlos down to the scene. you might want to take a scenic drive and avoid the traffic. i'm tracing with my arrow here. the road sensors are doing very well. it's wide open for you on 280. it's a good alternate. back to the desk. there's now a memorial outside of fremont's john f. kennedy school. it's for john webb. he was killed early saturday morning while driving on interstate 680 near fremont.

ktvu's brian flores is in fremont to tell us what happened and also the emotional memories from the people who knew him. brian? >> reporter: yeah, for those that knew coach webb, they say he was just a guy that would always help others whenever he could. here at the high school in fremont, school is out for the kids but that has not stopped some from paying tribute to the very popular loved coach. there's a sign that says, thank you, coach webb, for everything and then the flag is being flown at half staff today in honor of the coach. now, late saturday night, he was leaving the san jose state navy football game when the car he was a passenger in accidentally ran into a stalled car on 680 in fremont. webb got out of the car and tried to direct traffic when the driver of a white toyota corolla struck him at 1:00 a.m. and he was killed. nobody else was hurt. he was an institution at the

school, he also taught english, math and wood shop. those who knew him said his legacy could be felt by many even if he didn't play football. >> he wanted the kids to leave kennedy and go on do something, whether it be the school, military, whatever, but become successful people. that was always something that he strived for. >> reporter: now, webb was 7 of years old -- 76 years old. some say he was considering come back to the sidelines and coaching even though he was retired. you are looking at a flag her. hundreds of students and staff are expected here as well for a tribute and candlelight vigil. that's scheduled for tomorrow night at 6:00 right here at john f. kennedy high school in fremont. happening today -- sufl rights groups will be -- civil

rights groups to be speaking out against an alleged hate crime. janine de la vega is live in san jose where the controversy is kind of gaining momentum this morning. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. well, civil rights groups and community leaders will be holding a joint news conference today with the university officials here on campus at noon to condemn the actions of these four students who are accused of terrorizing a black freshman student. the naacp is also calling for more action. the naacp wants the santa clara county district attorney's office to increase the hate crime and battery charges against the four male students from misdemeanors to felonies. they also want the defendants to face a false imprisonment charge. the students are accused of putting a bicycle lock around their black roommate's neck calling him racial names and barricading him in his room. the naacp will be calling on the university to conduct an

investigation into why nothing was done sooner to protect the black student. the four teens accused have been suspended but some say that's not enough and are asking for expulsion. >> i think it's a slap on the risk to just suspend them for what happened. i think the petition online -- i think it's a good thing because it shows, like, the -- the voice of the students, the voice of the people who actually live here. >> reporter: on change.org's website there is an online petition asking the president to expel the four students accused. they also want housing privileges and financial aid taken away. the black student union is holding a black monday event to discuss what they want done. that will take place at 11:40 a.m. in the campus village quad. now, right after that is when the naacp and the university will hold their news conference at the tommy smith and john carlo statues here on campus.

reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. 7:36. happening today -- investigators in connecticut with planning to release a long- awaited report on the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. some have criticized the state attorney in charge for blocking information about the release about the shooting. he's gone to court to fight the release of 911 staps-- tapes. the attorney says he's only trying to protect the families of the victims. last year, a gunman killed 26 people at the school, 20 of them children. he killed himself as police arrive. bay area tree trimmers were busy overwhelmed by the trees toppled over by last week's wind storm. this crew from ponderosa tree service was running from job to job trying to clear trees that fell onto houses and cars. the owner of the company says he has not been this busy in years and they had to prioritize the job.

they are helping people with serious damage first. everyone else has to wait. >> most of the stuff, dangerous stuff has been handled. we've been triaging the work and trying to handle the worst stuff first. >> another company says it's been dealing with double the workload over the past few days. jobs are lined up for the next two months. a deadly winter storm continues around parts of the nation. 13 deaths blamed on the storms, they have hit new mexico, texas and arizona. the bad weather appears to be heading for the south and the northeast. it has freezing temperatures, snow and flooding. >> it's slick. i mean, there's a lot of snow on top of ice that's just being, you know, packed on. >> first responders out there are dealing with hundreds of weather-related crashes like this one here. the storm will cause travel problems for the 43 million

people expected to troofl for the thanksgiving -- travel for the thanksgiving holiday. yesterday 300 flights were canceled at dallas/fort worth airplane. the combination of sleet and rain is making it hard for planes to get off the ground. dallas airport officials expect more cancellations. holiday travelers flying in and out of oakland face another problem this thanksgiving week -- food and retail workers at oakland international airport are planning to go on strike on wednesday. that's the day before thanksgiving and one of the busiest travel days of the year. the workers say they are walking off the job to protest their current pay and benefits. they staged a similar one-day strike in august. it's not clear how the strike will affect airport restaurants and stores. some truck drivers at the port are planning a one-day strike on wednesday. the drivers are pushing for better way. they are also protesting new air quality rules that require them to upgrade their trucks.

the drivers are demanding the port help pay for the upgrades which are expected to cost tens of thousands of dollars. 7:39. in a couple of thundershowers, volunteers in san jose will pass out thanksgiving food boxes to thousands of needy families. sacred heart community has been collecting turkeys for the last week, just so they can give the food boxes to 4,000 families. they are still accepting turkey donations. the families registered for the boxes earlier this month. the pickup starts at 9:00 a.m. it will continue until wednesday. at 8:00 this morning, volunteers at st. francis, st. anthony -- san francisco st. anthony's foundation will continue to collect turkeys for their annual dinner. they will be accepting donations at a curbside dropoff through thanksgiving. the foundation hopes to collect a thousand turkeys so they can meet the goal of surveying 4,000 meals thanksgiving day.

u.s. stocks are higher as the deal between the u.s. and iran eased tensions. walmart rose slightly as the company announced the ceo stepping down. trade something expected to be light this week. taking a look at the big board, the dow is up 41. the nasdaq crossed 4,000. right now it's up at 3993. the s&p is up 1 at 1806. even with a long holiday weekend approaching local gas prices are still slipping. bay area drivers are paying 3.57. that's 2 cents less than a week ago. and prices are down.

retailers are trying to lure shoppers away from their thanksgiving dinner. retailers are starting to panic a little bit. >> there are fewer shopping days this year between thanksgiving and capacity. those are six very important day to the retailers. many take in more than half of their revenue during the holiday season. that's why many are not waiting for friday. best buy, one of the places that will open thanksgiving day, 6:00 p.m. along with walmart. electronics, on the top of many christmas lists. many people camping out already outside some of the best buy stores. they've been there since last thursday. >> i don't just do it for the sales. it's kind of fun. >> it's all about giving and it's all about the holidays. it's fun. >> let's go to camping. other stories opening on thanksgiving instead of waiting until friday, macy's, j.c. penney's kohl's and target will all open at 8:00 thursday night offering special deals if you are one of the first through

before. >> iran agrees to curb the nuclear activities and allow inspectors greater access including daily visits to two nuclear sites. in exchange, the west will reduce economic sanctions. san francisco's iranian american sheriff ross mirror mira rimmy hopes this will be a mend to the u.s. his father was born in iran. he says any movement towards diplomatic contact between the two countries is good for the world. 7:48. the city of san francisco has launched a new effort to keep pedestrians safe. the program called walk first is a joint effort between several agencies. half of all traffic deaths in san francisco involve pedestrians. the goal of the program is to reduce the number of deaths among the pedestrians by 25% by 2016 and 50% by 2021. $17million is expected to be spent on the program over the

there. highway 4 slow in antioch and slow in baypoint. in marin county, southbound 101 slow from 37 to 580. let's go to steve. clear skies, little hints of fog. more so out to the valley. stockton there's fog if you are heading in that direction. cold this morning. clear and cold. hazy, sunny and then hazy skies. 60s. no travel issues except the fog, at least through wednesday night. you can see -- when you see the bend like that, that tells you that high pressure is here. the system that gave us rain a couple of days ago last week is causing a lot of issues, especially with freezing rain and snow and rain down from arkansas into texas and the extent of this will go into the deep south and start to go up the coast. this could be a whopper of a system. if you have travel plans, just giving a heads up, there could be a big delay to this machine for the next couple of days going across the southern tier and the northeast the next couple of days. high pressure says no, no. everything is up and over.

low, mid-60s from san francisco to the peninsula redwood city at 65. mostly sunny tuesday. clouds start to increase on wednesday. we'll see mostly sunny skies. it looks like on thursday. so far it looks like the rain will go into southern california and then back to sunny and kind of dool as we go into the -- cool as we go into the weekend. another ski resort in the sierra will open today. kirkwood will be the fourth resort to open this season. these are photos sent in from the resort. kirkwood will open the solitude left at 9:00 a.m. they plan to open even more. northstar and heavenly welcomed the first skiers and snowboarders over the weekend. both had a big turnout. right now, all tahoe resorts are making their snow. boreal was the first to open in california. squaw valley and mount rose are due to open on wednesday. a lot of skiers and snowboarders typically try to make it a tradition to hit the slopes if they can over the thanksgiving holiday.

a homeowner in south carolina shot this video. a car was being lifted off the roof of his house. police were following the car but lost sight of it. the next thing they knew, the car was on the roof. so far, they are not sure how it got there. the homeowner, steve taylor, says he heard a loud bang but never expected to hear what the police told him when he answered the door.

>> i stepped in the -- i stepped out and there was a car on the roof. alarming, as you can imagine. >> no one, even the driver, was hurt. the driver ran from the scene. when police searched the car, they found crack cocaine and cash inside. money problems continue for the national championship reno air rates. now, organizers say the problems started after that 2011 crash where 11 people were killed. race executives say they've cut jobs, salaries, still they need to raise about $500,000. if they can't raise it, the 2014 races may have to be canceled. boeing is warning about engines on some of its jets that has japan airlines rescheduling its fleet. the airlinemakers have a notice to customers that 787s and some of the newer 747s with engines made by general electric should avoid flying within 58 miles of a thunderstorm. that's because the weather conditions could increase the

chance of ice crystals forms and reducing the power of the engines. g.e. says all six of the flights that have developed the ice problem did land safely. the 49ers are bracing for cold weather during tonight's monday night football game against the washington redskins. 49ers' safety eric reed tweeted out it's cold, when they arrived in washington, d.c. temperatures are expected to be in the low 30s when the teams kickoff at 5:40 tonight. the 49ers have only played one near freezing game since 2011. that happened on december 16th during a rain storm in ma game against the -- in a game against the new england patriots. two former oakland tech high school players attended a turkey giveaway. the family of mar salon lynch and josh johnson handed out food bags at the high school. they distributed more than 400 bags of turkeys and the trimmings on a first tum, first

president's first stop and you have the details of his complete schedule, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. the president is in town to raise money but he's also here to talk immigration policy and he will do that during a speech that will happen here at the betty ong recreational center in chinatown. preparations have been underway throughout the morning here. we've seen the secret service doing their security sweep. as we pan down and you look down the street, you can see police officers in this area are beginning to block off the streets as well. the president will be here in just over three hours and he will be speaking inside the gym here at the recreation center at 11:30 this morning. he will be calling on congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. the white house believes the immigration issue is critical to the asian-american community with an estimated 1.3 million of this country's undocumented immigrants coming from asia. president obama wants an earned path to citizenship coupled

with tighter border security. the president's bay area visit, though, comes as his approval ratings have dipped to 40%. the lowest since he took office. still, a lot of people here in san francisco wish they could be inside for today's event. >> they gave out free tickets. i wish i had known. my son wrote a letter to the president earlier this year and the president responded back. so it would have been cool for him to come and watch, you know, the president. >> reporter: here's what the president's day will look like following this morning's speech, he will head to the san francisco jazz center for a democratic fund-raiser there. after that, he will attend a private fund-raise erat the home of salesforce.com's ceo. both events are sold out. but ticket prices were significantly reduced beforehand. the president at the various locations, he will be greeted by protesters and air force one

will take off from sfo in the middle of the afternoon and then he's heading down to southern california. live in morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. president obama's bay area visit comes as his approval ratings are falling dramatically. the last time he came to the bay area on june 6th, gallup poll tracked him at 64%. disapproval, 32%. by last friday, it was almost the reverse. the president's approval rating was 39%. his disapproval rating 54%. president obama had hoped to meet batkid while he is in san francisco today. but apparently, the 5-year-old superhero just could not fit it in his busy schedule. the president was among the many people who cheered on miles scott during his make a wish day event in san francisco earlier this month. we showed you these pictures. but the chronicle says the boy is not available because he's scheduled to be on a national

show on the other side of the country. ktvu will have full coverage of the president's visit on the news at noon. you can get updates at facebook and twitter as well as ktvu.com. a bomb is in critical condition -- woman is in critical condition after jumping from the third deck of the oakland doll low see yum. it happen -- kol low she yum. it happened -- coliseum. it happened as thousands were leaving. tara moriarty is live to tell us about the good samaritan who risked his own life to break the woman's fall. >> reporter: good morning. he's a 61-year-old marine corps veteran from stockton. when paramedics arrived, he was still conscious. when asked why he would try to catch somebody from that high up, he said he didn't think about it. he just did it. all of this unfolded last night right after the raiders/titans game. we saw the ambulance trying to get to the coliseum. the woman jumped from section 301, an upper deck area above the south end zone covered by a tarp and closed to the public.

the good samaritan who tried to catch her was by the flag poles and the al davis flame. she jumped 50 feet to the pavement after fans pleaded with her to stop. >> we were going on the air. all of these people were running by. >> you could see people running by. >> reporter: the good samaritan suffered serious injuries. he's credited with saving her life. the woman is still in critical condition. deputies have not released any identity but we do know this is the first year the man bought season tickets. he says he's been coming to the games from stockton since the 1950s. back to you. >> thank you. the raiders and as could both have new short-term deals at the oakland coliseum by the end of the day. today's chronicle reports the coliseum board will meet today to consider a one-year lease for the raiders. they will also vote on a reported deal that would keep the as in oakland for the next

two years. neither lease agreement deals with the long-term question of whether oakland can keep the as and raiders from leaving town. the warriors are already planning to move to san francisco. 8:07. here's an update on the power outages we've told you about since 4:30 this morning. a big power outage in daly city is almost fully restored. pg&e says power went out about 12:30 this morning in the westlake neighborhood near mission street. at first about 6300 customers lost power because of a damaged underground cable. up until about an hour ago, about 1500 people still had no electricity. pg&e says the outage is now only affecting one customer. a real estate developer is at the center of a sex scandal and it's tied to one of san francisco's oldest churches. the chronicle reports the landmark st. francis church in north beach has fired william mclaughlin.

he's a marin county real estate developer and animal rightles activist who served as chairman of the church's volunteer program. his firings stems from allegations of improper behavior involving mclaughlin and a former church employee including alleged lewd photos and sex in the sanctuary. he's also accused of misusing church funds. 8:08. for the third year in a row. california has been named the worst-run state in the country. the website 24/7wall street used financial data to rank all 50 states. it says california took a big hit with the housing crisis. california ranked last for having the 20th highest debt per capita, the third largest budget deficit and the second highest unemployment rate. a bit of good news, california has the 11th highest per capita income. the best-run state according to the survey is north dakota. a new report on oakland's i.d. card program says most people

are not using the card's debit function. the san francisco chronicle says more than 4,000 cards have been issued since february. but only 80 people have used it as a debit card. the cards were created in part for immigration services. when it was first introduced the cost of using the services was higher than other cards on the market. since then, the city has reduced the debit fees. later today, a san francisco task force appointed by mayor ed lee will recommend ways to fix the city's transportation system. the task force says it will cost $10 billion over the next 15 years to pay for repairs. the task force is recommending three ballot measures that would raise $1 billion each to help pay the cost. 8:10. a popular high school coach and teacher is remembered. >> he came over 25 years ago

the so-called knockout game has reached california. it involves unsuspecting people being knocked out with one punch. knockout game incidents have happened in at least five states and washington, d.c. a couple of days ago it happened in san diego. at least four of the victims have died. police say it's hard to find people involved because victims are being knocked unconscious. they can't remember what happened. one of the three women held captive for years in a cleveland house has written a book about it. michelle knight will publish the book next spring. she will tell the full story of being kidnapped by ariel castro and held for 11 years. the two other women, amanda berry and gina dejesus are planning their own books and clab rapting with their -- clash rating with two reporters.

two abe baloney divers were found dead along the coast. the first diver was found dead on saturday. the 67-year-old man had been diving alone in the waters the cove at salt point state park. the second diver, a 57-year-old from oakland was found on sunday olkolmer gull -- off kolmer gulch. a new report says tax payers in san jose pay more for san jose police officers than any other city. $186,000 per officer. this is the fifth highest cost out of 79 bay area cities. most of that is for medical and pension costs. the average officer's gross salary is just over $111,000, which ranks near the bottom in silicon valley. last, with the city and the police union reached a tentative deal to restore a 10% pay cut put in place three

years ago. union members will begin to vote on the deal tomorrow. this week marks the 35th anniversary of the assassinations of san francisco mayor george moscone and supervisor harvey milk. they were shot and killed at city hall november 27th, 1978 by a former supervisor. this coming wednesday, there will be a march and vigil in san francisco in their honor. it will begin at 7:00 p.m. at harvey milk plaza. word goes on on san francisco's new central subway system. a boring machine will start to dig underground near the old navy store at 4th and market. that drilling in the next couple of days may affect b.a.r.t. service in the powell and montgomery stations. the second tunnel boring machine is due to cross under market street in january. 8:16. a new report shows that hundreds of underground leaks will go unmonitored because of a new state policy. since the 1980s, more than

44,000 underground fuel tank leaks have been recorded in the state. but a change went into effect last year that allows some of those sites to end regulatory monitoring even if contamination is traced. the state said too much money was being spent on low-threat sites. marin county is a big step closer to banning single use plastic bags. residents are being invited to express their opinions on the county's environmental impact report on the issue. county officials are expected to certify the report in late january. after that is done, cities and the county are expected to approve a ban on plastic bags. almost 4.5 million californians will travel this holiday weekend. the day before thanksgiving will probably be the busiest day ons on the -- days on the highway. if you have to drive, get on the road in the morning to

avoid the biggest traffic jams. sunday will be busy all day. another 500,000 californians are expected to fly somewhere for thanksgiving. the airlines say make sure your flight is leaving on time before you leave your house. they also say get to the airport at least 90 minutes before takeoff. all three bay area airports expect crowds to be bigger this year than last year. 8:18. sal is here keeping a close eye on the roads. you say it will be a fairly different traffic pattern this week. >> that's right. today is somewhat of a normal commute day. as we get closer to thursday. that will change. on wednesday afternoon, as you just mentioned in the story you read, the patterns will be different. it will be very slow, especially trying to get out of town and then we'll have a few days of relative quiet on the road with enforced -- with higher enforcement of dui patrols, by the way, i should add. this is highway 4. you can already see it's different.

it cleared out early, early as compared to what it would be on monday where we didn't have a big holiday coming up. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up for a 10, 15- minute wait before you get into san francisco. the nimitz freeway is slow as you head south. i just saw this cross on twitter that pg&e says that all of the customers in daly city are now back on power. so pg&e tweeted that to say everyone has power now. that means some of the traffic signals in the westlake area and parts of san francisco should be back to operational. let's go to steve. >> yes, i want to confirm that. jocelyn tweeted me and said no power and it's freezing. that's for sure. we had very cold lows. hazy skies around. a spare the air started last night. very quiet conditions. it will be a hazy day. even though it will be sunny, not much of a breeze. mostly dry november so far. there's a hint of something on sunday.

we had the good rain tuesday and wednesday of last week but the system coming in, everyone is saying it's coming south san francisco's rain now again we're looking at the rain year which starts july 1st through november 25th. 1.69 total. i mean, that's really bad. 37% of normal should have at this time of the year, 4.5 inches of rain. for november, 1.30. should have 3 plus. we're behind on the year and the month. not much the next couple of days. the low -- it's 39 in houston. they won't get any snow. but there's snow to the north. this looks like a big system as it moves into the deep south and then moves into the carolinas and then tuesday night, wednesday, the rain arrives in the northeast and then maybe the snow late thursday. any travel plans, there could be serious delays starting tuesday night into thursday if

8:25. the cleanup from a deadly tornado goes on in illinois. want to show you video of new minden, illinois. blue tarps covered damaged homes there. people say some of their homes were ripped from the foundations. they are just completely gone. others are now clearing out debris, sorting through into piles. at least two deaths are blamed

on that tornado. fire crews back here are making progress on the fire burning in sonoma county. it started friday about ten miles northeast of geyserville. it is now 65% contained. 3300 acres have burned. all evacuation orders for the area have been lifted, though. some of the firefighters, they will start leaving today. the cause of that fire, still under investigation. 8:25. an unattended deep-fryer is to blame for a house fire last night in pittsburgh. it happened at 5:30 p.m. yesterday at a house on springfield drive. firefighters say the smoke was visible from a half-mile away. the fire caused about $60,000 in damage. >> on scene, we had heavy amounts in the kichable. it started to -- kitchen. it started to spread in the living room. we were able to knock the fire down. >> the chief says this is a reminder to be extra careful when using deep-fryers, especially with thanksgiving less than four days away. 8:26. happening right now, the 2013 u.s. capitol christmas tree is in washington, d.c. it arrived about an hour ago. these are live pictures.

60s. here's sal. goorling, steve. right now traffic is going to be -- good morning, steve. right now traffic is going to be busy in some areas. it's cleared out in others. traffic patterns will be slightly different this week. the traffic is backed up for a 10, 15-minute wait at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a commute on the san mateo bridge, that traffic is looking good but it's slow when you get to the peninsula because of earlier issues on 101. so 280 is suggested there. i want to look at contra costa county. it really says a lot when you see antioch and you don't seat -- don't see a lot of red on the map. it's slow to the construction zone. things have cleared out. let's go back to the desk. happening today -- students will be speaking out about hate crime allegations four white students are accused of tormenting their african- american roommate. janine de la vega is live in san jose to tell us what the civil rights groups are asking for.

janine? >> reporter: dave, they want the four defendants to face harsher punishments and they want the university to dig deeper. activists don't want this happening to another student. now, this is all going to be discussed today at a news conference at noon. the naacp wants the santa clara county district attorney's office to increase the hate crime and bat rit charges against the -- battery charges against the four male students from misdemeanors to felonies. they also want the defendants to face a false imprisonment charge. students are accused of putting a bicycle lock around their black roommate's neck calling him names and also barricading him in his room. the naacp will be calling on the university to conduct an investigation into why nothing was done sooner to protect the student. the four teens accused have been suspended but some say that's not enough and they are asking for expulsion. >> this can't be taken lightly. it's something that should not happen in 2013.

you are at a place where you should receive education to alleviate your ignorance, not a place to practice it. >> reporter: there is an online petition asking the university's president to expel the four students accused. so far, more than 1300 people have signed it. now, they are also wanting housing privileges and financial aid being taken away. the black student union is holding an event at 11:40 a.m. in the village quad. right after that is when the naacp and the university will hold their news conference. that will take place in front of the johnny smith and john carlo statues. back to you. happening today -- investigators in connecticut plan to release a long-awaited report on the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school where 26 people, including 20

children, were killed. some have criticized the state attorney in charge of the investigation for blocking the release of information about the shooting. for example, he's gone to court to fight the release of the 911 tapes. today, a judge said he will listen to the tapes, then decide later if they should be released. a memorial has been set up outside a high school in fremont to mourn the loss of a long-time coach and teacher. this video was taken outside john f. kennedy high a short time ago. there are some flowers in honor of 76-year-old john webb. he was killed early saturday morning while driving on interstate 680 near fremont. the chp says he was trying to direct traffic away from a serious crash when another car hit and killed him. the tragedy has stunned the kennedy high campus. >> it just seems so surreal. i mean, even standing here, it's kind of like, did this really happen? it's tough to take in.

>> hundreds of people are expected to attend a candlelight vigil vigil in honor of the popular teacher and coach. it's being held tomorrow night outside of kennedy high in fremont. bay area tree trimmers had a busy weekend overwhelmed by all of the trees toppled by last week's wind storm. this crew was running from job to job trying to clear trees to fell on houses and cars. the owner of the company says he's not been this busy in years and they have to prioritize the jobs. a deadly winter storm is already disrupting holiday travel plans. 13 people were killed as at storm blasted through -- as the storm blasted through oklahoma, texas and new mexico. just like that. forecasters say the storm is hard to predict. it appears to be headed to the southeast and the northeast

coast bringing icy roads, snow, hail and floods. >> this is not texas weather, man. this is alaska or idaho. >> in oklahoma, the state police rushed to more than 600 weather-related crashes. parts of arizona flooded over the weekend. the storm is expected to cause problems for the 43 million holiday travelers this week. just yesterday, 300 flights at dallas/fort worth international airport were canceled. the combination of sleet and snow made it hard for planes to get off the ground. crews could not de-ice them fast enough. dallas airport officials say they expect more cancellations. holiday travelers flying in and out of oakland face another problem this thanksgiving week. food and retail workers at oakland international airport are planning to go on strike on wednesday. that's the day before thanksgiving and one of the busiest travel days of the year. the workers say they are walking off the job to protest their current pay and benefits.

they staged a similar one-day strike in august. it's not clear how the strike will affect airport restaurants and stores. happening today -- people in san jose are handing out thanksgiving food boxes to people in need. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is at sacred heart community center where pickup begins in about 25 minutes. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. well, certainly a big day and a big need for many families out here in santa clara county. we're live here. you can see the line is already forming here at sacred heart community service. i'm joined by starl receivens, the community event -- carol stevens, the community event coordinator. >> it's been a difficult year. rents in san jose have gone up 10% and food stamps have been cut for low income families. we have over 1500 families coming in today to get a food box. by wednesday afternoon we'll have 4,000 families here. >> reporter: let's talk about

the food box. again, 1500 families expected to be here today. but there is a greater need. you need at least 4,000 turkeys. >> that's right. we have just enough turkeys today to get through the day. about 1500 right now. we're counting on the community to come through so we can have a thousand more -- 2500 by the end of the week. >> reporter: this is one of the boxes that many of the families will be received. what's in the box? >> we have canned food, some dried foods, bread, we have produce for families, dessert, and, of course you, the thanksgiving turkey. >> reporter: and again, turkeys are in need still to feed up to 4,000 people. how can people drop that off? >> this is our donation station. people can come right here and drop off one or two or ten turkeys. we also can take donations because we can purchase any turkeys that we are short. >> and we're taking a look inside the warehouse now where a lot of the food is stored right now. a lot of these families are

the president's coming here for two fund-raisers and a policy speech about immigration reform. alex savidge is live in san francisco. you have a complete rundown of the president's schedule today. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. the president will be here in san francisco in just about three hours or so. already behind me, you can see a pretty good-sized crowd outside of the betty ong center in san francisco's china town. this is both volunteers helping out with today's event as well as bests who will be attending today's speech. let me show you some video from a short time ago because some of the people attending this event have already been lined up for quite sometime waiting to get inside. president obama will be speaking inside the gym here at the community center at 11:30 this morning. he will be calling on congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. the white house says the immigration issue is also critical to the asian-american community because an estimated 1.3 million of this country's

documents are from asia. president obama is pushing for an earned path to citizenship coupled with tighter border security. one woman who is attending the speech believes the president can get something done on immigration. >> i would love to hear more on the dream act and what that will mean for young people who are living in america right now. >> after this morning's speech, the president heads to the sf jazz center for a democratic party fund-raiser there. after that, the president will attend a private fund-raiser at the presidio heights hole of sales force -- home of salesforce.com's ceo. both events are sold out but ticket prices did have to be reduced significantly. the president's bay area visit comes as his approval rating has dipped to 40%. the lowest it's been since he took office. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu

channel 2 news. >> all right. we'll have full coverage of president obama's visit on the channel 2 news at noon. you can also get updates on our facebook and twitter pages as well as at ktvu.com. 8:46 police are investigating an accident that killed a 3-year-old boy. it happened just after 1:30 yesterday afternoon when three people were walking down oak street and crossed vine street. police say a car turned onto oak street and hit all three people. one was the child in the stroller. he died at the hospital. police say the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. you may still have to -- have to shop for thanksgiving dinner but some are putting it on the back burner to start on the capacity lists. pam cook has more. >> some are not worried about thanksgiving this year, there are six fewer shopping days between thanksgiving and christmas. the stores are not wasting any

time. bad news for the retailers since many of them count on the holidays for more than half of their yearly revenue. good news for shoppers, though, the deals actually started over this past weekend and they will gain momentum throughout this week. we're looking at people camping outside best buy stores across the country to get the very best deals. best by and walmart are not waiting for black friday. they are hoping thanksgiving at 6:00 p.m. many toys 'r' us at 5:00 p.m. macy's, j.c. penney's kohl's and target will open at 8:00. some people are not happy about it. but is it paying 0 -- paying off? >> we know last year, 30 million shoppers were out and shopping online on thanksgiving day. we're fully expecting to see just as many people this year. >> that was just thanksgiving day. now, black friday still draws the biggest numbers, though. many have consumers -- nearly

half of consumers plan to hit the stores on black friday. 34% of shoppers will be back in the stores over thanksgiving weekend. analysts predict more money will be spent, many of it online. don't forget cyber monday. last year, the days have extended as well. they start on sunday and it goes cyber monday, tuesday, and wednesday and thursday. they were all about a million -- a billion dollars, that is, online those days. ready? >> never ready. sal's ready. they are ready at the toll plaza, too, aren't they? >> they are ready. i think you really have to be ready for anything goes this next week when it comes to driving on the roads. we've already been talking about how wednesday's is the busiest travel day not only on the roads but in the air. at the toll plaza, it's backed up -- backed you up for a 10 -- backed up for a 10, 15-minute

especially in the southeast, the carolinas and all the way up to the northeast. rain and snow coming in behind that. it would be wednesday into thursday. let's hope things, you know, maybe clear out by thursday. travel plans, i would stay -- stay advisedded on the latest -- advised on the latest forecast. the mild here, the days are so short, won't last. 20 in tahoe. 31 ukiah. 36 in lakeport and lake county this morning. there's a few ent withs around. that will be -- a few 20s around. there will be 20s around the santa cruz mountains. it's a dry forecast. everything says the next low coming in will go right down and say hello to l. and and san diego. patchy fog out there. temperatures, they are cold out there. we're seeing 60s on the high side. after a lot of 30s and 20s and 40s. again, from the coast to the bay inland from the north to the south, everybody will be

happening right now -- president obama, there he is just getting on the plane. this is in seattle, leaving seattle. air force one. he's gonna be heading to san francisco. boy, it looks foggy there. this is in seattle, though. norm little you think about san francisco having some fog. that is air force one there on the tarmac. president obama is scheduled to arrive at 10:00. his first event, 11:35 at the bettying on chinese recreation center. he will be going to a fund- raiser and heading down to l.a. at -- later this afternoon. so expect some traffic problems in san francisco as a result of that. full coverage, of course, coming up at noon. today, another resort in the sierra will open its slopes to skiers and snowboarders. kirkwood is the fourth resort to open so far this season. these are some of the photos just sent in by the resort.

kirkwood says it will have the solitude lift open and are working to open more. the hill opens in a couple of minutes. over the weekend, both north star and heavenly welcomed their skiers. both resorts had a big turnout, they say. right now all tahoe resorts are having to make their own snow. bor rial was the first resort -- boreal was the first resort to open in california. squaw mountain is set to open on wednesday. many skiers and snowboarders make it a tradition to hit the slopes if they can over the thanksgiving holiday. the 49ers bracing for cold weather tonight for monday night football against the redskins. 49ers' safety eric reed tweeted, it's cold, when they arrived in washington, d.c. temperatures will be in the low 30s at kickoff at 5:40 tonight. 49ers will only played one near- freezing game against the
